Risk Assessment (RA) As part of the management of Health & Safety employers are required to assess risks and to manage them. Your employer is required by law to protect your employees, and others, from harm. The minimum they must do is identify what could cause injury or illness in your business (hazards), decide how likely it is that someone could be harmed and how seriously (the risk), take action to eliminate the hazard, or if this isn’t possible, control the risk.
All new techniques, equipment and high hazard chemicals should have a specific RA written, along with any work proposed out of hours or lone working. This MUST be completed by a competent person PRIOR to starting the work.

Please complete your RA along with your group Safety Rep and Manager, making sure it is signed and dated. RAs should be reviewed regularly.

‘”COSHH” refers to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, which is the main piece of UK law in place to control the hazards from all chemical, biological or hazardous agents and to which we must comply. Under this legislation systems must be in place to assess and control the risks from hazardous substances. Staff, students and visitors must be made aware of both the potential hazards they might encounter and the control measures put in place for their safety. All staff and students who are required to handle chemicals should have been provided with adequate information, training and supervision to allow them to work safely and special arrangements for vulnerable workers (e.g. young people, pregnant women etc.) should have been considered. One of the main means to comply with these regulations is through Risk Assessment. Managers and principal investigators are responsible for ensuring that the risk assessment and controls are carried out, adequate for the work, regularly monitored and that the assessment and controls are reviewed and revised.

ESSENTIALS OF BIOLOGICAL COSHH RISK ASSESSMENTS
As part of the Institute of Cancer Sciences and University policy, all new members of staff are required to read though and complete the E-Induction, linked below, together with the Fire Safety training. Staff should read the ICS Safety Policy document and the Health & Safety Manual. Induction training must be completed prior to starting work and can be organised via line managers.
The E- induction covers SEPS, Occupational Health and Radiation Protection Service and staff should complete the linked Moodle quiz.
